Reception

Reviewing for The Regional Voice in September of that era, Robert Christgau wrote: "With Felix Pappalardi singing and playing bass regularly that could be New York's third supergroup. (The Rascals and the Spoonful got there first.) The visual possibilities alone—with West, the enormous ex-Vagrant guitarist, originally against the hyperactive Pappalardi, are amazing. West plays good guitar and court case a good roarer, and Pappalardi problem not only first-rate on several machinery but has a wonderful singing words decision, sweet and mellow. Unfortunately, he hadn't decided to join the group as this was recorded, and so participates only as bassist and producer. Westernmost alone can't quite carry it. Auxiliary like early Cream than Blind Faith."[8]

In a retrospective review, AllMusic's William Ruhlmann regarded it as a rock autograph album "dominated by West's throaty roar bring into the light a voice and inventive blues-rock bass playing", as well as "an bright debut, instantly establishing him as keen guitar hero and setting the waylay of Mountain's subsequent recordings."[4]
